Memorial Day 2021 brings a new bright shining hope to the previous masked and locked down months. It truly is a significant holiday. From the roads and highways to the parks and backyards, America is preparing to celebrate all types of Memorial Day outdoor fun with family and friends.
The shadow of the Covid-19 Pandemic has for too long clouded our lives. However, May 31st is almost upon us and we hope it marks the beginning of a glorious summer and an end of those shadowy pandemic months.
Before the Celebration, Remember the 3 R’s
In the past few weeks, Consolidated Waste Systems attacked problems dealing with MicroPlastic and NanoPlastic Monsters. The threat continues to grow.
However, we still have some control. As individuals, we can reduce that threat. We can reduce the amount of waste plastics before they become Micro or NanoPlastic particles.
So, while we celebrate Memorial Day, we ask you to resolve to practice the 3 R’s. Remember the 3 R’s?
The 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
Children may be more familiar with these concepts than adults. The 3 R’s have been taught in school to our younger generation.
The Green Growing organization describes the concepts this way:
- “Reduce means to consume less plastic products.
- Reuse means to simply reuse any recyclable products that you may receive.
- Finally, recycle means that instead of just throwing away everything you receive, put the items that can be recycled into the correct bins.”
Putting the 3 R’s of Recycling Into Practice?
Your Memorial Day picnics are perfect for beginning your 3 R’s. Look carefully at the items you purchase. Next, make a list of these items. Label each of them as to the category they fall into? Then, evaluate them against the ideas below.
-
Reduction of Expendable Items
The first R is for reduction. This means simply buying less… Buy fewer throw-aways or recyclable items.
This is the most effective of the 3 methods. In fact, you can avoid the other 2 methods completely if you could eliminate all of your picnic throw-aways or un-recyclable items.
Obviously, this is not practical unless you wish to spend your entire holiday washing plates, glasses, etc. Truly, Holidays almost demand many of the conveniences that we have grown accustomed to. Issues such as this make “Reducing” the most difficult.
Looking carefully at the items you buy, you may find there are some you could do without or reduce. Many of the items you purchase are probably disposable. If instead, you bought an item that is reusable, it might cost you more now, but less if measured over time. Here is an example.
Mary regularly bought disposable water by the gallon from a local store costing $1. Then, she decided to change to a 10-gallon reusable dispensing bottle which cost approximately $15. Initially, her cost was higher. However, by buying a larger quantity, reusable bottles of water, she reduced the cost over a period of time.
-
Reusable Items
Reuse items that otherwise might be considered “disposable.” You can reuse almost anything or so it has been said. Of course, there are practical limitations to this idea.
That is what this category is all about. And here are a few ideas to help get you started.
- Throw Chinese food containers away? Wash them and use them to save leftovers in the fridge.
- Trash used envelopes? Of course not. Use them for a shopping lists.
- Start a compost heap for your food scraps. Surprise! It can do wonders for your garden.
- Glass jam jars can be turned into containers or even cups.
- Flip through a magazine and throw it away. Not on your life. Put it in the bathroom for light reading.
- Reuse your shopping bags or recycle them. Use shopping bags as garbage can liners. Or carry your lunch in a paper bag.
Before you go to throw something away, especially something plastic, see if you can find another use for it.
3. Recycle It
This is the easiest and most common way to dispose of paper, plastic, and other waste products. Additionally, it is probably the easiest way to reduce the amount of waste in landfills.
Recycling is simple. Just place the recyclable items in a special bin and leave it with your trash. The most common items that are accepted are plastic, paper, glass, and aluminum cans.
Certain items such as batteries or tires must be handled in special ways as required by your city. Hazardous materials always require special handling.
And now, back to our Memorial Day Celebration.
The Truth about Memorial Day
In modern times Memorial Day has always inspired Americans with the first taste of summer escapes. It has become the first summer holiday and for many, a mini-vacation.
All of these celebrations are wonderful enterprises. Therefore, we initiate this summer spirit of joy.
However, we must not neglect the true meaning of Memorial Day 2021. Did you know the custom of setting aside Memorial Day to honor our nation’s military dead was initially created shortly after the Civil War?
The first purpose of Memorial Day was not to create an early summer celebration. The government-endorsed this holiday to give people time to honor fallen members of America’s Armed Forces.
Thus, the initial reason for Memorial Day was to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
How Can We Honor Soldiers Who Have Given Their Lives to Secure Our Countries Freedom?
Although there is no doubt we will all have fun on the holiday weekend. We also hope you find a moment to pause in the Happy Memorial Day 2021 Celebrations.
Further, we hope you will use this pause to remember and commemorate our soldiers’ sacrifices. Read the real story of the truth behind Memorial Day at this informative source.

Memorial Day 2021 Message: More than a Mini-Vacation
Consolidated Waste Systems has decided that a weekend plus one-day memorial is not enough for our fallen heroes. We’ve started early.
We are already watching families drive the busy highways and byways of the US, to visit grandmothers and enjoy vacation experiences.
Memorial Day: Time to Honor, Remember, and Celebrate
We all pause to see the President of the United States lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. But there is another side to Memorial Day.
We also realize Memorial Day 2021 is the key that unlocks the world of happy outdoor activities, especially in our beautiful area.
Yes, Memorial Day opens the beautiful, powerful season of summer to us. Here at Consolidated Waste Systems, we are committed to helping our associates, clients, family, and friends enjoy it as much as we do! Celebrate summer!
A Special Song to Commemorate Memorial Day
For many Americans, the song by Lee Greenwood, “I’m Proud To Be An American,” reflects the feeling we share about Memorial Day and the soldiers that we honor. We would like to share part of those words that brings tears to our eyes and a lump to our throat:
“If tomorrow all the things were gone
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife
I’d thank my lucky stars
To be livin’ here today.
Cause the flag still stands for freedom
And they can’t take that away.
And I’m proud to be an American
Where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up
Next to you and defend her still today.
Cause there ain’t no doubt, I love this land.
God bless the USA.”
Terrific Take-Aways
This Memorial Day 2021 weekend will bring you fun, family, and food. However, underneath the festivities, Consolidated Waste Systems knows it is a special time to remember the heroes who fought for freedom.
Thus, we recognize it is also a day for giving is our most reverent and respectful honor to our military fallen heroes.
In addition to our smiles and laughter during Memorial Day 2021, we commemorate our soldiers’ sacrifices with a quiet heart, a bowed head, and silent gratitude.
